19 jobs for workers of the future

Workers of the future will change jobs 19 times during their lives, according to research into Britain's workforce of the future.

More than two million people will also have two or more jobs at the same time, as "parallel careers" become the norm and people extricate themselves from professions that are becoming extinct.

A report by City & Guilds, the UK vocational awards body, says the internet will play a key role in people switching careers because online education means people can re-train easily.

It forecasts that five million people, 20 per cent of the working population, will be planning a career change in 2025, double the current 2.5 million per year.

Longer life expectancy and pension under-funding will also have an impact. No longer able to retire in their sixties, many will look at ways to top up their income during their retirement.

But jobs such as postal workers, milkmen and estate agents could become less common, with people using email and the internet to buy, sell and communicate.

This will create a transient society of workers, and the research estimates that the average British employee starting work in two decades' time will have 19 different jobs during their working lifetime.
